When to Convert JPEG to PNG
Preparing for editing
If you plan to edit a photo in Photoshop, GIMP, or another editor — save it as PNG first. Each JPEG save adds compression artifacts, while PNG preserves the image unchanged.
Creating graphics and collages
PNG is ideal as an intermediate format for design projects. You can cut out objects, add text, combine multiple images — and quality won't suffer from repeated saves.
When conversion isn't needed
For viewing, messaging, or social media posting, keep JPEG — it's smaller and loads faster. Convert to PNG only when you need to work with the image.
