WebP format specifics
History and development
Google introduced WebP in 2010 as an alternative to JPEG and PNG for the web. The format is based on the VP8 video codec and provides better compression while maintaining quality.
WebP advantages
WebP files are 25-35% smaller than JPEG and 26% smaller than PNG at comparable quality. The format supports transparency (like PNG) and animation (like GIF) in one format.
Compatibility issues
Despite support in all modern browsers, many desktop programs don't work with WebP. Microsoft Office, older Photoshop versions, printing systems require JPEG.
When to keep WebP
If the file is only for web use (social media, websites) and not needed in other programs β keep WebP. The format is more efficient and supported by all browsers.
Future of image formats
AVIF and JPEG XL are next-generation formats. They're even more efficient than WebP but have limited support so far. JPEG will remain a universal standard for many years.
